The Best Skin, Hair & Nail Supplements

Biotin, hyaluronic acid, and blends — including where the evidence genuinely runs thin.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never affects which products we pick or how we rank them.

This is the category with the widest gap between marketing and evidence, so it's the one where an honest guide is worth the most. Biotin in particular is near-universal in beauty supplements and only demonstrably helps people who are actually deficient — which is uncommon.

We're upfront about which ingredients have support behind them and which are along for the ride, because a supplement you take for a year deserves that scrutiny.

Nature Made Hair, Skin & Nails with Biotin 2500 mcg

The only pick here carrying USP Verified, which means an independent pharmacopoeia has checked that the contents match the label — the single most useful thing you can know about a supplement. It is also the most restrained formula on this page, and deliberately so: biotin at 2,500 mcg rather than the 10,000 mcg the category has drifted towards, vitamin A as beta carotene rather than preformed retinol, and zinc paired with copper so that long-term use does not deplete one to raise the other. Nothing here is a megadose, which is exactly what we asked for.

Full ingredient list published and screened.

    • Restricted substances30/30

Nothing on the EU banned or restricted lists, and no common contact sensitizers.

    • Independent verification20/20

An independent lab verifies the contents (USP Verified).

    • Dose disclosure25/25

Active concentration stated by the manufacturer — rare, and the strongest signal here.

    • Biotin 2,500 mcg
    • Vitamin C 100 mg
    • Zinc 11 mg with copper 0.9 mg
    • Vitamin A 750 mcg, as beta carotene
    • Note: Even at 2,500 mcg, biotin can interfere with lab immunoassays including troponin and thyroid tests. Tell your doctor you take it before bloodwork — this applies to every product on this page, and least of all to this one.

    Best formulated

    Pure Encapsulations Hair/Skin/Nails Ultra

Every dose on the label is named — there is no proprietary blend anywhere, which is the first thing our criteria ask for and the thing this category most often fails. It contains no vitamin A, D or E at all, so there is no fat-soluble vitamin to accumulate, and the four inactive ingredients are a vegetarian capsule, potato starch and ascorbyl palmitate. The gap between this and our top pick is not the formula, which is better: it is that we found no named independent verification programme, and a brand testing its own product is not the same claim.

    • Biotin 6,000 mcg
    • BioCell Collagen hydrolyzed collagen complex 500 mg

    • Zinc 30 mg with copper 1 mg, silica 30 mg
    • Note: No named independent verification programme — potency and purity testing is the brand's own.
    • Note: Zinc at 30 mg is most of the 40 mg tolerable upper limit. The 1 mg of copper alongside it is the detail that makes that defensible.
    • Note: Biotin at 6,000 mcg is high enough to interfere with lab immunoassays. Mention it before bloodwork.

    Best for oral hyaluronic acid

NatureBell Hyaluronic Acid 250 mg with Biotin

If you want to try the ingredient this guide calls promising rather than proven, this is the straightforward way to do it: 250 mg of hyaluronic acid, stated, in a three-active label you can read in one go. Two things stop us ranking it higher. Its listing advertises vegetarian capsules while the ingredient list gives the capsule as gelatin, and those cannot both be true. And 'third-party tested' is claimed without naming the programme, which is not the same as USP or NSF.

Nature's Bounty Advanced Hair, Skin & Nails

The best-selling product in the category, and a fair illustration of why we wrote these criteria. It discloses every dose, which is why it still scores respectably — the problem is not what is hidden, it is what is in there deliberately. Vitamin A arrives as retinyl palmitate at 100% of the daily value, the preformed kind that accumulates, on top of whatever your diet and multivitamin already supply. It is coloured with titanium dioxide, which the EU banned as a food additive in 2022, and with carmine. If you want the argan-and-hyaluronic formula, this is it; we would rather take the shorter label above.

    • Biotin 5,000 mcg
    • Vitamin A 5,000 IU as retinyl palmitate
    • Hyaluronic acid 30 mg, hydrolyzed collagen 50 mg, argan oil 25 mg
    • Vitamin D3 800 IU, vitamin C 60 mg, vitamin E 15 IU
    • Note: Coloured with titanium dioxide. The EU banned it as a food additive (E171) in 2022 over genotoxicity it could not rule out; it remains permitted in US supplements.
    • Note: Vitamin A is preformed retinyl palmitate at 100% DV — the fat-soluble vitamin our criteria warn about, and the one that stacks with other sources.
    • Note: Also contains carmine, an insect-derived colourant, in a gelatin softgel — so neither vegan nor vegetarian.
    • Note: Laboratory-tested is the brand's own claim; we found no independent contents-verification programme.

What we weighed

Ingredients that matter

Biotin
Ubiquitous. Genuinely helps if you're deficient; most people aren't.
Oral hyaluronic acid
Emerging evidence for skin hydration. Promising rather than proven.
Zinc
Well established for skin, and a common shortfall in real diets.
